Observation Narrative
This plot captures the head of an interdunal swale where water ponds up to 1 meter deep and occasionally floods an adjacent pine - hardwood forest (water marks on trees to 1 m). The edge of the pond is dominated by Salix nigra 7 to 11 meter tall, forming a short statured forested wetland. One quadrant of the plot has heavy regeneration by Populus heterophylla, 0.5 to 3 meters tall. The wetland is just less than 1 acre in size is a linear feature with a deeper, ponded area at the head of the swale. This is one of several ponds in the area, and similar Salix-dominated vegetation is present in all of them.
